Proper technique for Installing Melt Pressure sensors: Cleaning Mount Holes

Temperature and pressure transducers are important for monitoring your processes. They provide critical data that tells you if the process is running at peak performance and work to alert you of any problems. Making sure you receive accurate data is of the utmost importance. Improper installation of transducers can damage them and cause them to provide incorrect data. It is important to make sure that these items are properly installed in order to have them working at the high-standard you expect from Dynisco. Below are suggestions for properly cleaning mount holes before installing melt pressure sensors.

Transducer mountings need to be properly cleaned in order to get the best results. A major cause of damage to transducers comes from mounting holes that are improperly cleaned or sized. In order to avoid this it is best to take great care in preparing the mounting for the instrument.

Dynisco has developed a kit with all of the tools needed to properly clean and size mounting holes for transducers. The kit in question is the Dynisco Transducer Monting Hole Cleaning Kit P/N 200100. The following is the proper way to use this kit in order to get the best results when mounting a transducer.

The cleaning tool can only be used when the polymer of the mount is in a semi-molten state. During cleanings, be sure not to exceed a torque rating of 100 inch-pounds. Doing so will damage the cutting edges of the tool. The tools are designed as to not wear if reasonable care is taken when using them. We highly recommend that high-temp lubricant be applied to the guide sleeve and gauge plug to avoid seizing.

Steps for Installation

The following steps are recommended by Dynisco for proper cleaning of mount holes:

Step 1: Clean the threads of the hole with flour-fluted bottoming tap until the threads are clean.

Step 2: Thread the guide sleeve/cleaning drill into the hole. Finger tight is sufficient. Push and turn the cleaning drill in a clockwise motion. Do this so that the residue is scrapped from the critical surfaces. Do no not, however, rock the tool back and forth as this can cause damage to the hole. Remove the tool and clean it before repeating the scrapping and cleaning operation until the tool removes from the hole cleanly.

Step 3: Apply Dynisco blueing agent on the gauge plug surfaces below the thread. Insert the gauge plug into the hole and rotate until the surface binding is encountered. Remove and inspect. Blueing should only be scraped off 45° sealing chamfer. If blueing is removed from other surfaces, then the mounting hole is not clean or has not been machined properly.

New lightning fast Confocal Controller from Micro-Epsilon

Micro-epsilon recently launched the world’s fastest confocal chromatic controller. The confocalDT 2471 HS high speed controller provides a measuring rate of 70 kHz. If you are measuring highly reflective surfaces there is, at that time of writing this, no faster way to measure their distance and thickness.

Needing no external light source, the controller uses internal LED lighting. This means that compared to a Xenon light source, the integrated light is more durable, meaning less downtime and purchase costs. As a result, not only is the confocal controller incredibly fast, but it will also save you time and money compared to using a controller with a Xenon light source. An active exposure time regulation feature also reduces downtime allowing for different surface types to be compensated for quickly and precisely. These features also allow the controller to measure matt and dark services with high precision.

The confocal controller can be operated with any IFS sensor, and comes and a few different versions to meet application needs. A user-friendly web interface handles the entire set up process, mean no extra software is needed. Data output is via Ethernet, EtherCAT, RS422 or analog output.
